Elder Mediation

Do you or your family need help to resolve conflict about Care Decisions, Finances, Wills or Future Planning?

Senior’s Mediation is a unique type of mediation for elderly people and their families, friends, carers and/or professional service providers. It is a non-adversarial approach to resolving conflict or making important decisions.

Kathy has worked in the field of aged care and with vulnerable adults. She understands the complex issues and important decisions that may face elderly people and their families. It is important to preserve decision making, independence and also relationships where possible. This can be a delicate balance and assistance may be required.

KP Consult mediates and facilitate discussions and decision making with the older person/people and the appropriate parties where decisions need to be made about health, finance and/or care arrangements.

Senior’s Mediation provides an opportunity for the older person to talk freely about their wishes in a supportive environment. This allows them to have a voice in decisions regarding their own care and future. It also helps preserve relationships allowing participants to reach resolution and promote better outcomes for future decision making.

Who uses Senior’s Mediation?

Senior’s Mediation can require the engagement of a range of involved parties including the older person, family members, friends, caregivers and health professionals.

When would you need Senior’s Mediation?

There can be a number of reasons why people use Seniors Mediators, these may be:

  • To resolve conflict within the family regarding the future decisions being made for the older person.

  • To resolve conflict prior to entry to Residential Aged Care Facility

  • To resolve a complaint with the residential care facility

  • Assist with mediating decision making with family members about care needs now and for end of life planning

  • A change in health status which may be causing conflict within the family

  • Unresolved conflict between the client and the community care being provided

  • Financial decision making conflict

How does it work?

The first step of the Senior’s Mediation process involves understanding and assessing the situation or issue that needs to be responded to. Interviews with all parties are organised. For the older person this is usually a face-to- face interview. Other parties may have the interview conducted by telephone or Zoom.

In the Senior’s Mediation session everyone is made aware of how the process will be undertaken and what will occur. The mediator will actively assist the older person, their families and significant others with difficult conversations, to as applicable make plans and reach voluntary agreements by informed consent.  Usually the session goes for about two hours.
